Quilted Hot Pad Free Pattern – Winter Haven Fabric by Benartex

Hey friends! I’m so excited to be part of this Winter Haven blog hop today, there is even a giveaway!! (see details below!). Rachel Rossi’s new line for Benartex is giving me all the Christmas feels, and I couldn’t resist whipping up my casserole sized, quilted hot pad pattern with it.

If you’ve been hanging out here for a while, you know this quilted hot pad pattern is one of my favorites. It’s fast, practical, and a great way to use up the fabric you can’t bear to cut into your “good” project just yet. With Winter Haven, every print felt too pretty to save for later, so this hot pad was the perfect excuse to dig in early.

And since it’s the middle of July, I figure there’s no better time to start thinking about Christmas. If you do any kind of holiday sewing for gifts, getting a head start now means you’re not scrambling come December (we’ve all been there).

Materials Needed

• Winter Haven fabric by Rachel Rossi for Benartex
• Batting
• Insulbrite Thermal Batting
• Backing fabric – 1/2 yard
• 1/4 yard binding fabric
• 505 Spray Baste Adhesive
• Walking foot
• Aurifil 50wt cotton thread, color 2835 (a soft light blue)

About the Fabric

Winter Haven is full of cozy plaids, little woodland critters, and rich greens and reds that just scream Christmas morning to me. I love designing with lines like this because there’s so much variety in scale and print that it’s easy to get a really scrappy, layered look without anything feeling too matchy.

It is a large line of fabric. I chose to pick out the red, greens, and teals for a brighter look. Here is the full line if you want to check them all out. 🙂

Sewing Up This Quilted Hot Pad Pattern

Normally when I make this hot pad, I’m digging through my scrap bins and piecing together whatever widths I have on hand. This time was a little different. Benartex was kind enough to send me a small bundle of Winter Haven, including backing and binding, so instead of scraps I cut everything down into strips and pieced it the same way I normally would. It’s a fun reminder that this pattern works just as well with fresh fabric as it does with scraps, so use whatever you’ve got.

Just like my original version, this pattern is sized for a standard 9×13 casserole dish, but it’s easy to size up or down. Simply measure your dish and cut your batting a few inches larger all around to give yourself room to trim square at the end.

A quick reminder on the Insulbrite. It helps reflect heat away from your countertops, which is exactly what you want under a hot dish straight from the oven. It’s not microwave safe since it has metal woven through it, so keep that in mind if you’re gifting this to someone who might be tempted to pop it in the microwave. If you’d rather skip it, a second layer of batting works in a pinch, though it won’t be quite as heat resistant.

For the quilting, I kept it simple and did it myself on my Janome Memory Craft 6650 with my walking foot. I used Aurifil 50wt cotton thread in a soft light blue, which ended up being such a pretty contrast against the Winter Haven prints.

Perfect for Gifting

I think hot pads like this make such a sweet little gift, especially around the holidays. They’re useful, they’re handmade, and they give you a chance to show off a fabric line you love without committing to a whole quilt. If you’re hosting Christmas dinner this year, having a few of these in a festive print like Winter Haven on your table just makes everything feel a little more special.

I have tied these up with a cute tea towel, some wooden spoons and a nice note, they make perfect teacher gifts!

If you want to make a set, this same concept works beautifully as mug rugs or mini placemats too. Just leave out the Insulbrite for those.
