How to Sew a Cozy Literary Themed Quilt with “Bookish” Fabrics
You know those projects that just feel “right” from the moment you pick out the fabric? That was this quilt for me. I designed the Love Letters quilt pattern because Iāve always been a sucker for a handwritten note, and I wanted to see if I could capture that feeling in fabric with this literary themed quilt.

When it came time to pick a collection for this version, Sharon Hollandās Bookish line from Art Gallery Fabrics was the only choice. If youāre a fellow bookworm, you get itāthe muted teals, the warm ochre, and those soft pinks feel exactly like a stack of well-loved novels. It turned this project into the ultimate literary themed quilt.
Finding My Flow at the Machine
Thereās something so therapeutic about block-based quilts. After the initial cutting, I spent a few nights just getting lost in the chain-piecing. This pattern isnāt about complex techniques or over-complicated cutting; itās about the rhythm of the stitch.

Because the pattern is fat-quarter friendly, I had a blast deciding which Bookish prints would be the “envelopes” and which would be the hearts. I try to save the big prints for the hearts and the smaller details for the envelopes. Thereās no fussy cutting required hereāthe prints do all the heavy lifting. I loved seeing how the tiny floral motifs looked next to the more structural, text-heavy prints. Every time I finished a block, it felt like Iād just finished writing a little note to a friend.
The Finishing Touch
I knew I wanted something special for the quilting, so I sent this one off to Kelly Borns. I told her I wanted the texture to really highlight the design, and she absolutely crushed it.

She did some beautiful custom work that follows the lines of the envelopes and adds a soft movement to the hearts. Itās one of those quilts that you canāt help but pet. The combination of the silky Art Gallery Fabrics and Kellyās stitching makes the whole thing feel like an heirloom youāve owned for decades.
Why Youāll Love Making This Literary Themed Quilt
Iām a big believer that quilting shouldn’t be stressful. I wrote this pattern to be a “happy sew”āthe kind of project you look forward to sitting down with at the end of a long day.
- Itās fast: The blocks come together in a really satisfying way.
- Itās versatile: It looks completely different depending on your fabric, but it always keeps that sweet, nostalgic soul.
- Itās the perfect size: Itās a 62ā x 72ā throw, which, in my opinion, is the ideal size for actually using on the couch while youāre reading.
